SCSP Hosts Third Board of Advisors Meeting (Apr 14, 2022)

ARLINGTON, VA

On April 12, the Special Competitive Studies Project (SCSP) convened its third Board of Advisors meeting in Arlington, Virginia. The meeting, chaired by Dr. Eric Schmidt, was attended by Bob Work, Dr. Nadia Schadlow, Michèle Flournoy, Mac Thornberry, and SCSP’s panel experts.

The focus of the day’s discussions was on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the role technology is playing in the war and technology companies’ responses, and the implications for the broader geopolitical and technological competition. The Board heard from current national security officials in the U.S. government, a former UK official, and executives from four of America’s largest tech companies – Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft.

“The perspectives shared in yesterday’s discussions – on the future of conflict, the fate of democracy, and the power of digital connectivity- were tremendously helpful in shaping our future actions and in support of our mission – to help ensure the United States is positioned and organized to win the techno-economic competition,” said SCSP CEO Ylli Bajraktari.

“It was also very powerful to hear from our technology firms regarding the actions they took in Russia following, and throughout, its invasion of Ukraine, the lessons they learned, and their thoughts on how to deal with situations like this in the future. This valuable meeting has given SCSP Advisory Board Members and staff thoughtful material to consider as we write our first major report to be released in the fall,” said SCSP Chair Dr. Eric Schmidt.
